Grant Shapps £2 bus fare cap across England to save passengers money doesn’t add up

This morning, Grant Shapps, Secretary of State for Transport just tweeted the good news…

“I’m introducing a £2 cap on almost every single bus journey in England outside London – from Jan-Mar – backed by up to £60m, helping millions access affordable transport this winter as we continue to support people facing rising costs of living“.

Sounds helpful, but, there is a catch. You see, there were 1.57 billion bus journeys in England in 2021 and that dropped from 4 billion due to the Covid restrictions, so, from January 2023 to March 2023, there could potentially be over 1 billion bus journeys. That means a discount of 6 pence per bus journey, from the £60 million, so it doesn’t seem likely to go far. Then again, I haven’t got a Government calculator, so I’m probably wrong.
